well ties attribute extraction seismic

I joined Fugro-Jason in 2002 from a processing background with WesternGeco. In 3 years as a project geoscientist I developed skills in post-stack, pre-stack simultaneous and geostatistical inversion along with associated well tie, petrophysics and seismic interpretation techniques. During this time I completed projects such as:

  • modelling and inversion of Aboozar and Sirri-D fields, Iran (IOOC)
  • geostatistical inversion of Puchkirchen gas storage field, Austria (RAG)
  • simultaneous angle inversion of Buzzard Field, North Sea (PanCanadian)
  • geostatistical inversion and lithology modelling, Algeria (Burlington)
  • post-stack inversion and lithology modelling, Nigeria (ENI)

At ECL/RPS between 2005 and 2013 I established a role as an AVO/inversion/forward modelling specialist, conducting standalone projects and contributing to broader scoped contracts. During this time I became an expert Hampson-Russell user. This specialism requires up to date knowledge of seismic processing, well logging, petrophysics, seismic attribute generation and interpretation.

Highlights included:

  • reservoir forward modelling, offshore Ghana (Hess)
  • attribute based exploration, Tanzania, Cuba, Cote D’Ivoire (Ophir, BG, ONGC, Oranto)
  • multiple reservoir characterisation projects, Cameroon, EG (Bowleven, MMIE, Glencore)
  • multiple forward modelling exercises, Norway (RWE)
  • seismic net pay estimation via EEI coloured inversion, North Sea, West Africa, East Africa, Falklands (Serica, Hess, Ophir, Borders & Southern)

At Glencore from 2013 to 2021 as Chief Geophysicist my role was to ensure that the most appropriate and leading technologies were applied to each of the operated and non-operated assets. This entailed either doing the work myself or evaluating which service company offered the best solution. During this time I utilised Hampson-Russell but also experimented with ODiSI, JiFi, PreStack-Pro and Earthworks either in-house or via outsourced projects.

QI highlights from this time include:

  • determining a seismic reprocessing flow to optimise near angle S/N such that characterisation and mapping of a critical reservoir seal became possible via EEI
  • lithology characterisation of stacked reservoir field via Hampson-Russell EMERGE and Cegal’s ODiSI Petrel plugin
  • seismic net reservoir mapping of multi-phase sub-tuning thickness turbidite reservoir
  • fluid phase prediction for prospects and field step outs
  • synthetic modelling of what became the Zama discovery
  • generation of DHI screening attributes for multiple new venture assessments
  • sand/shale probabilistic modelling on multiple West Siberian fields

Synthetic well ties, seismic interpretation, and depth conversion run like a continuous thread through my career.

It began with creating synthetic seismogram products for the UKCS in the mid 90’s. I ended my time at WesternGeco as a depth imaging processor which requires interpretation skills and profound knowledge of velocity modelling.

At Fugro-Jason, RPS and Glencore I predominantly interpreted and visualised seismic data using the Kingdom Suite, made well ties in Hampson-Russell and performed programmable multi-method depth conversions in Petrosys.
